Jean Batten School

Opened in 1970 Jean Batten School stands proudly in Mangere East Auckland. This isn’t just any school. It’s named after the legendary aviator Jean Batten. She was the first person to fly solo from Great Britain to New Zealand. Jean Batten herself officially opened the school on March 7 1970. Mr Leonard the Friends of the School chairperson secured her permission. The school’s logo features her Percival Gull plane’s propeller. Its motto is Faith in God Confidence in Oneself. Jean Batten left a substantial amount of money to the school after her death. Her nephew Rick Batten opened the school hall in 1999. The school’s Grace McPeak Information Centre honors a former principal. Jean Batten School initially had over 700 students. The number has since settled around 350. This reflects the area’s growth and the diverse cultures represented. The school’s mission is to challenge students. They are encouraged to pursue high-flying pathways.
