Sheridan’s roots reach back to the city of St. Anthony. St. Anthony was annexed by Minneapolis in 1872. The area attracted immigrants from Eastern and Northern Europe. They found work in grain mills and lumber yards. Breweries and railroads also provided jobs.
Much of Sheridan’s housing arose between the 1890s and 1930s. You will find a mix of single and multi-family homes. Industrial spaces now host artist studios. 13th Avenue NE is a revitalized commercial strip.
Sheridan is named after Civil War General Philip Sheridan. He also served as Commanding General of the U.S. Army. Sheridan now has the Sheridan Global Arts and Communication School. New City Charter School is also located here.
The Minneapolis Brewing Company once stood here. Today, it is offices, studios, and apartments. The Pierre Bottineau branch of the Hennepin County Library is here.
Let’s stroll to Sheridan Memorial Park. It sits behind the former brewery. This park honors Minnesota veterans. Robert Smart, a local artist, created the spherical sculpture. It features protective shields. The memorial emphasizes the cost of war. It also highlights the importance of peace. Quotes about peace are engraved in granite along the perimeter walk. Peace gardens and markers stand tall. They describe the ten conflicts where Minnesotans served. Faces of veterans are cast in iron.
The park board purchased the original Sheridan Field in 1912. It cost about $7,000. It was a half-block across from Sheridan School. In 1953, the park board abandoned the site.
Today’s Sheridan Memorial Park sits on the Grain Belt Brewery site. The first lot was purchased in 1986. WWII veterans sought a place to commemorate war veterans. They joined the Sheridan Neighborhood Organization in 2005.
Since 2007, the park has expanded. Virginia Puzak donated land to expand the park. The park board received lots from Dr. Frank Galka.
Improvements were completed in 2019. These include a playground and picnic shelter. A basketball court and playable art were added. You will also find benches and a drinking fountain.
