Located in the heart of Shanghai Jinhuangjiang Temple boasts a history far older than the city itself. Its origins trace back to the Three Kingdoms Period a time of immense upheaval and transition. The temple initially stood beside Suzhou Creek. It was then known as Hudu Chongyuan Temple. During the Song Dynasty it was relocated to its present site.
The temple wasn’t always a place of serene worship. During the tumultuous Cultural Revolution it suffered a devastating fate. The temple was repurposed as a plastics factory. A fire in 1972 reduced much of the structure to ashes. It lay in ruins. A significant portion of the meditation rooms and prayer spaces were lost forever.
But like the phoenix rising from the flames Jinhuangjiang Temple was reborn. Reconstruction efforts focused on restoring the magnificence of the Hall of Heavenly Kings and the Hall of the Three Wise Men. In 1984 the temple reopened its doors. By 1990 it was fully accessible to the public.
Today three main halls stand as symbols of resilience. The Mahavira Hall houses a colossal jade Buddha statue. This statue is the largest in mainland China. Its sheer size 3.78 meters tall and weighing 11000 kilograms is breathtaking. The temple’s wooden architecture is a beautiful example of Song Dynasty style. A magnificent Ming Dynasty bell weighs around 3.5 tons. It’s a reminder of imperial power.
Beyond the main halls lies the Guanyin Hall. Here devotees pay homage to the Goddess of Mercy. Her camphor wood statue is an awe-inspiring sight.
