Gazing up at the grandeur of Masjid At-Tin, one can almost hear whispers of its beginnings. Masjid At-Tin isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a testament to love, loss, and legacy, nestled near the vibrant Taman Mini Indonesia Indah in Jakarta Timur. Masjid At-Tin’s story intertwines with the life of Indonesia’s former first lady, Ibu Tien Soeharto. The mosque’s construction, initiated in April 1997, was a dream of Ibu Tien, a wish whispered during a pilgrimage to Mecca. Tragically, she passed away in 1996, before seeing her dream realized. Her family, driven by love and devotion, established the Ibu Tien Soeharto Foundation to complete Masjid At-Tin. The mosque’s name, At-Tin, carries a double meaning. It refers to the fig, a fruit mentioned in the Quran, but also echoes Ibu Tien’s name, a poignant tribute to her memory. Masjid At-Tin officially opened its doors on November 26, 1999. The first call to prayer resonated through its halls on November 25, 1999, marking a spiritual awakening. Designed by architect Ir. Ahmad Noe’man, Masjid At-Tin spans an impressive 70,000 square meters. Its main building covers 10,000 square meters and can accommodate up to 25,850 worshippers. Masjid At-Tin is more than just a beautiful building. It’s a vibrant hub for the community, hosting various events, from religious gatherings to the impactful “Munajat Akbar Indonesia Bersholawat,” a mass prayer held in December 2022. Inside, the mosque boasts a fascinating blend of architectural styles, echoing influences from the Ottoman Empire while incorporating traditional Indonesian elements. The main prayer hall, situated on the upper level, is reached via a grand staircase. The lower level houses a wealth of resources. There’s a library for quiet contemplation, educational spaces equipped with audiovisual technology, and a dedicated area for VIPs and mosque officials. Multipurpose halls provide space for gatherings and seminars. Even the landscaping at Masjid At-Tin holds meaning, incorporating water features to create a sense of tranquility and reflection. Masjid At-Tin stands as a symbol of devotion, a tribute to a beloved figure, and a testament to the power of family and faith. It’s a place where whispers of the past mingle with the prayers of the present, creating a unique spiritual experience in the heart of Jakarta.
