Was this neighborhood always called Calumet Heights? Calumet Heights actually got its name from a combination of the Calumet River and the unique limestone ridge that runs through the area. This ridge is no ordinary geological formation. It’s a remnant of the Niagara limestone, a reminder of the glacial Lake Chicago that once covered this land. The neighborhood sits atop this ridge, giving it a subtle but noticeable elevation. Calumet Heights, with its charming residential streets, has a rich history. It started as a humble settlement. A rail yard in 1881 and a quarry near 92nd Street spurred early development. The Calumet Heights subdivision, established in 1887, solidified the neighborhood’s identity. Waves of immigrants, first Irish and German, followed by Italian, Polish, and Yugoslavian, shaped the area’s character in the early 20th century. After World War II, Calumet Heights experienced a building boom. The quarry, once a hub of industry, was filled in to make way for more homes, many reflecting the architectural styles of the 1940s and 50s. Today, these houses, along with their well-kept yards and manicured hedges, contribute to the neighborhood’s unique charm. The doctor’s haven nicknamed “Pill Hill” within Calumet Heights has an intriguing story of its own. Many of those houses were built on Stony Island Ridge, a reminder of the area’s glacial past. Calumet Heights, despite its peaceful ambiance, has witnessed Chicago’s evolving demographic landscape. The influx of African Americans in the 1960s marked a significant shift, and today, they make up a substantial part of the community, contributing to its vibrant culture and identity.
