“Lost, go to Cubao.” My mother’s words echo even now. She meant Cubao as the city center. But within Cubao exists Cubao Expo. It’s a compound defying time. Once a shoe hub, now it is a subculture melting pot.

Cubao Expo emerged in the 60s. It started as Marikina Shoe Expo. It showcased Marikina’s finest shoes. This was during the Martial Law era. That was in 1972. The Asian financial crisis hit in 1997. The shoe expo closed.

But it reopened in 2000. Some stores closed again. Artists saw an opportunity because rental rates were low. They occupied spaces. It became a haven for art and bric-a-brac. Cubao Expo slowly transformed. It became a DIY culture hub.

Years later, Cubao Expo took off. Diverse establishments attracted crowds. Vintage Pop, Bellini’s, and Chunky Farflung were original favorites. Mogwai, Pablo, and Sputnik brought in new people. Scenester, film buffs, and onlookers arrived.

Today, Cubao Expo is like a “hipster tito”. It enjoys antiques and artsy things. It values art. It remembers the past despite social media’s influence. Cubao Expo remains true to itself.

Walk around Cubao Expo. It is more than Fred’s bar and Bellini’s restaurant. It’s more than hipster coffee at INT EXT. It offers a gastronomical journey. It is a breathing space. It is quiet amid the noise. It’s an empty chair offering rest.

Cubao Expo unites unlikely people. It favors no one. Everyone falls for its charm. They call it home. Expo is an institution. Being there since day one is a feat.

Around 2010, Expo was reborn. New tenants mixed with original stores. It attracted all kinds of people. Nostalgia played a role. Events like MEIDAY! MEIDAY! were legendary.

Expo differs from other places. It has an unspoken requirement. You don’t need much money. You just need presence and kindness. The scene polices itself.

People find friends and mentors at Cubao Expo. It’s a place to chill. The spots do it out of love. They’ll continue because they love it.

Cubao Expo welcomes diverse people. They are passionate. They connect with others on the same level. There’s a sense of camaraderie. Friendships form genuinely.

Josh Soriano said Expo reminded people of home. Fred’s has stickers, posters, and money on the wall. It evolved organically. Expo doesn’t ride the modernization of Araneta. The admin wants it for the arts. It’s a comfort zone.

Kyle Salindong says class doesn’t matter. Rich or poor, all are equal. It’s inclusive. Stores come and go. But the people remain. They make Cubao Expo special. It is not important who you are. Here in a place where everybody is a somebody, you’re nobody, which means you can be the most authentic you.

Cubao Expo defies urban progress. It unites diverse people with conflicting personalities. It’s an oasis in Manila’s urban jungle. Cubao Expo is the place to be yourself. It’s a community-driven hub. So, borrow Meredith Grey’s line. Take a chance. The view from the other side is spectacular. A different perspective might be all you need.
