Built by its own members Hope Presbyterian Church stands tall. A testament to faith and community it’s a Chicago landmark. This all-African American congregation began in 1896. A small group from Bowling Green Kentucky settled in West Englewood. They sought to establish a Presbyterian presence in their new neighborhood. Rev I W Nicholson led the charge. His aunt Mrs Ethyl Hargrave remained a devoted member until 1994. Early meetings took place in homes. Later services were held in a rented store.

The church’s story is one of perseverance. Rev George Washington Camp became the first pastor in 1909. He served for a year. The congregation worked tirelessly. They raised funds and bought land at 61st and Loomis. Construction on the current building began in 1911. It was completed in 1913. The members literally built their church with their own hands. Rev C Lee Jefferson arrived in 1911 to lead the congregation into its new home.

Hope Presbyterian Church thrived through challenging times. World War I the Great Depression did not deter its growth. A vibrant choir Boy and Girl Scout troops and Red Cross Girls flourished. After World War II membership declined. Many families moved seeking better housing and schools. However Hope Church found new life under Rev Herbert W Jones. His long tenure from 1941 to 1980 marked a period of renewal and expansion. A new Christian Education Center was dedicated in 1976.

Tragedy struck in 1967 when a fire severely damaged the sanctuary. The congregation showed incredible resilience. They temporarily worshipped elsewhere. Within a year they rebuilt their sanctuary. The church has experienced periods of growth and change. Rev Leslie Sanders’ dynamic leadership brought significant growth. He served as pastor for many years. He brought a unique style of preaching. His sermons were inspiring uplifting. His wife Lady Julie has also played a significant role. She leads Hope Technology and Education Center. This center provides essential training for adults and youth.

Hope Presbyterian Church continues its legacy. It stands as a beacon of faith. It’s a symbol of community resilience. It’s a place of worship and service in Chicago. Its history is etched in its walls. It is a story of dedication and determination. It is a story of faith hope and love.
