What if these red bricks could talk? The Norwegian Lutheran Memorial Church of Chicago also known as Minnekirken stands as a testament to Logan Square’s rich history. It echoes with stories of faith, community, and architectural resilience.
Minnekirken means Memorial Church in Norwegian. It was first built by Norwegian immigrants in 1912 as Christ Church. In 1934, its name changed because of the war memorial. It was dedicated that year across from the church.
This historic church is located at 2614 N Kedzie Avenue in Logan Square. The Norwegian Lutheran church is a finely crafted church. It reflects the architectural heritage of the neighborhood. It was the only church to consent to landmarking. This happened when the Logan Square Boulevards district was designated a historic district.
The church’s design showcases ecclesiastical architecture. It was executed in Gothic Revival style. The facade features red brick and limestone accents. Pointed arch windows and an entrance portal invite you inside. Vertical piers rise into the sky. They are topped by a spired tower. Windows feature stained glass set into tracery.
Imagine stepping inside Minnekirken. You would find a community that cherishes its Norwegian roots. Minnekirken is the only remaining Norwegian language church in Chicago. Services are held each Sunday at 11:00 a.m. Some include Norwegian Liturgy and Hymns.
Every November Minnekirken hosts its annual Taste of Norway. It’s always the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Here you can find traditional Christmas cookies and julekake. There are also Norwegian goods and traditional pea soup. The church is 50 steps from the Kedzie side of the Blue Line Station.
Minnekirken underwent a massive restoration project. The project cost about $725,000. A $250,000 Adopt-A-Landmark grant helped fund it. The restoration addressed water vulnerability. It also repaired masonry displacement. The church commissioned an exterior wall condition assessment. It found adverse envelope conditions.
The church hopes to continue serving as a reminder. It reminds of a neighborhood heritage long past. Scandinavians played a significant part in this heritage. During the first half of this century there were several Norwegian language churches in the Logan Square area. There were over 20 Norwegian churches in the metropolitan area.
