From the ashes of the Great War, a monument arose. The Leibdragonerdenkmal, a bronze testament to the sacrifices of the 1st Badische Leib-Dragoner-Regiment Nr. 20. Here, at the Mühlburger Tor along Karlsruhe’s Kaiserallee, the Leibdragonerdenkmal stands. It depicts a World War I dragoon, steel helmet firm, lance poised. His steed, caught in a dramatic levade, embodies the spirit of the cavalry. The monument, created by Kurt Edzard between 1926 and 1929, is more than just a statue. It’s a poignant reminder of a bygone era. The Leibdragonerdenkmal is one of two memorials dedicated to Baden’s prestigious Leib regiments. The other stands not far from here, honoring the Leibgrenadiers. The regimental crown, prominently displayed on the pedestal’s front, speaks volumes. It whispers of loyalty, of duty, of the ultimate sacrifice. On one side of the pedestal, a simple yet powerful dedication. “1914-1918 To the Leib Dragoons who fell in the war from their comrades.” On the other, a verse from the Edda. “You die – possessions die, kin die. Only one thing lives – we know it – the dead’s deed-fame.” These words, taken from the 76th stanza of the Havamal, add a layer of ancient wisdom to the modern tragedy. In 2023, a new voice joined the conversation. An information stele was added to the Leibdragonerdenkmal, providing historical context. It offers a modern perspective on the monument’s message. It invites us to reflect on the complexities of remembrance. The Leibdragonerdenkmal stands as a silent sentinel. It bears witness to the enduring power of memory. It reminds us to never forget the human cost of conflict.
