Founded in 1872 the Danmarks Meteorologiske Institut DMI stands before you. It’s a significant part of Danish history. This unassuming building houses a wealth of meteorological expertise. Initially established under the Ministry of the Navy DMI’s mission was simple. Make observations communicate them and develop scientific meteorology. These goals remain central. However modern technology significantly enhances their impact.

The DMI’s role extends beyond weather forecasts. It provides crucial data for various sectors. These include fisheries agriculture and even sports associations. This makes the DMI’s work vital to Danish society. Their advanced technologies ensure efficiency. Supercomputers satellites radar and automated equipment all play a part. The DMI’s commitment to research and development is unwavering. This ensures that they meet the highest quality standards.

A fascinating aspect of DMI’s history is its international collaborations. In 1985 the DMI partnered with Nordic countries. The Netherlands Ireland and Spain joined in too. The goal was the development of the High Resolution Limited Area Model HIRLAM. This was a groundbreaking effort. It marked the first worldwide collaboration of its kind. The HIRLAM project led to advanced short-range weather forecasting.

Since 2004 the DMI expanded its collaboration with the ALADIN consortium. This is led by Mu00e9tu00e9o-France. This new collaboration focused on improving the AROME forecasting system. This led to the development of the Harmonie-AROME system. The DMI has progressively integrated this system for Greenland the Faroe Islands and Denmark since 2013. It’s a testament to DMI’s commitment to innovation and accuracy.

In 2017 DMI launched COMEPS the COntinuous Mesoscale Ensemble Prediction System. This innovative 25-member system operates with 25 kilometer resolution. It provides hourly updates to probabilistic forecasts. The DMI continues to push the boundaries of weather prediction. This is through ongoing research and cutting-edge technology. In 2018 they even operationalized a hectometric-scale system for strong coastal wind prediction in Southern Greenland.

The DMI is not just about predictions. They operate an ice patrol service from Narsarsuaq in Southern Greenland. This service monitors sea ice and icebergs. It creates ice charts and ensures safe navigation in Greenlandic waters. This vital service shows DMI’s dedication to safety and maritime operations. Their contributions safeguard life and property across the Kingdom of Denmark. The DMI truly is a cornerstone of Danish safety and societal planning.
