“What if I told you the story of a church born from the dreams of fifty Catholic families?” That’s how Mary Queen of Heaven Church began. It started with a dedicated group called the Central Club in 1908.

These families in Cicero Illinois wanted a new parish. They petitioned Archbishop Quigley for help. In 1911, their prayers were answered. Father A.J. Dedera was appointed to establish Mary Queen of Heaven Church.

Initially, the parish met in a repurposed building. It had been a clubhouse, a town hall, and even a Methodist church. Archbishop Quigley blessed the temporary church on December 10 1911 and named it Mary Queen of Heaven.

The first Mass was celebrated on December 17 1911. Baptisms soon followed. The first marriage took place in 1912. The parish quickly grew.

By 1913, Mary Queen of Heaven school opened. There were only 38 pupils. Father Dedera taught alongside two lay teachers. Soon the Sisters of Charity arrived. Student numbers surged.

In 1915, tragedy struck. The excursion steamer Eastland capsized. Several Mary Queen of Heaven parishioners perished. Despite the loss, the parish persevered.

A new church-school building was constructed in 1915. It cost $40000. It was dedicated in 1916. By 1919, the school teemed with 490 pupils. Ten teaching sisters were needed. The parish acquired more land.

In 1923, Father William R. Griffin became pastor. He eliminated the parish debt in six months. He also started May and First Friday devotions. These fostered spiritual growth.

Father Griffin organized the 28th International Eucharistic Congress in Chicago in 1925. He oversaw major improvements to Mary Queen of Heaven Church. A new rectory was built. By 1929, plans for a new church were underway.

Construction began in 1929. It was completed in 1930. The new church cost nearly $350000. It was furnished and dedicated debt-free. This was thanks to the parishioners’ generosity.

In the early 1930s, the parish expanded. There were over 600 families. Seven Masses were held each Sunday. Under Father Griffin, Mary Queen of Heaven became a prominent parish.

World War II brought sorrow. Many young parishioners served and some died. Despite the war, the parish thrived spiritually. Masses and Novenas were crowded.

By the 1940s, Father James F. Halpin led the parish. The Men’s Club and choir flourished. Other priests like Father William J. Zink and Father Aloysius H. Minarik contributed. They developed youth groups and religious education.

In 2022, Mary Queen of Heaven merged with Our Lady of the Mount. This was part of the Renew My Church initiative. The new parish was temporarily named Mary Queen of Heaven, Our Lady of the Mount Parish. Later, it was renamed Our Lady, the Mystical Rose Parish.

From humble beginnings, Mary Queen of Heaven Church became a vibrant community. It faced challenges but remained committed to its faith. The story of Mary Queen of Heaven is a testament to faith and resilience. It shows how a small group can create a lasting legacy.
