Did German immigrants arriving in 19th-century Chicago ever envision that a blizzard would inadvertently plant the seeds for a religious cornerstone? On a blustery day in 1843, nine men and a group of women huddled in a grocery store at the corner of Franklin and Lake Streets. Their purpose? To establish the first Lutheran congregation in Chicago, which they christened Saint Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church. Seeking guidance about locations and fundraising, they approached William B. Ogden, Chicago’s first mayor. Ogden, instead of just advice, gifted them a plot of land at LaSalle and Ohio Streets. The fledgling congregation wasted no time. Their first church, a humble 30×60 foot structure, was completed in February 1844. It was a testament to their dedication, featuring a simple black velvet-draped table as the altar. Imagine the scene: flickering candlelight illuminating the homemade lectern, simple benches, a potent stove battling the Chicago chill, and a poignant image of the crucified Christ behind the altar. Their first pastor, Augustus T. Selle, arrived in 1846, a man deeply rooted in Lutheran doctrine. Interestingly, he almost resigned when the church considered deviating from Lutheranism. However, Selle persevered, even drafting the church’s constitution. This document proved significant as Saint Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church became the birthplace of the Missouri Synod in 1847. Sadly, the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 turned their efforts to ash. But, in a remarkable display of resilience, the congregation rebuilt, their spirit unbroken. Today, Saint Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and community, a beacon rooted in a blizzard’s chance intervention.
