From a Native American settlement to a sprawling urban park, Seward Park’s story is one of transformation. Seward Park stands on Bailey Peninsula. It offers a glimpse into Seattle’s past. The land was once home to the x̌ʷə́lšucid (a subgroup of the Duwamish). They called the peninsula sqʷəbə́qsəd, referring to its rocky points. They gathered resources here and lived in harmony with the land. Fast forward to 1892. The idea of a park arose, but distance made it a low priority. John Charles Olmsted, stepson of the famed Frederick Law Olmsted, saw the peninsula’s potential. He urged the city to protect this natural gem. In 1903, he incorporated Seward Park into his vision for Seattle’s park system. The city finally acquired the peninsula in 1911 for $322,000. They named it Seward Park, after William H. Seward, the Secretary of State who orchestrated the Alaska Purchase. Seward Park officially opened to the public in 1911. Today, Seward Park covers 300 acres. It features 120 acres of old-growth forest. These majestic trees, some over 250 years old, stand as a testament to the area’s rich natural history. A paved 2.4-mile loop trail winds around the park. It offers breathtaking views of Lake Washington, Mount Rainier, and the surrounding landscape. Within the park, you’ll discover hidden gems. A Japanese-style torii gate stands near the entrance. It replaced a wooden one built in 1934 for Seattle’s Potlatch festival. A taiko-gata stone lantern, a gift from Yokohama in 1931, sits quietly, expressing gratitude for Seattle’s aid after the Great Kantō earthquake. Look up, and you might spot bald eagles soaring overhead or a colony of feral Peruvian conures flitting through the trees. These unexpected residents add another layer of intrigue to Seward Park’s story. Seward Park’s transformation continues. In 2008, the Seward Park Audubon Center opened in the renovated historic Seward Park Inn. It provides educational programs and a deeper understanding of the park’s ecosystem. Seward Park remains a vibrant hub for the community. It represents a unique blend of nature, history, and culture. It stands as a symbol of Seattle’s commitment to preserving its natural heritage.
