Founded in 1867 Saint Stanislaus Kostka Roman Catholic Church stands as a testament to Chicago’s rich Polish heritage. This isn’t just any church. It’s the mother church of all Polish churches in the Archdiocese of Chicago. Imagine the waves of Polish immigrants who sought solace and community within these walls.
Saint Stanislaus Kostka’s history is deeply intertwined with the growth of Chicago’s Polish community. The original church survived the Great Chicago Fire a remarkable feat. However it was later demolished to make way for the magnificent structure we see today. That stunning building was designed by the renowned architect Patrick Charles Keely. He also designed Chicago’s Holy Name Cathedral. The construction lasted from 1871 to 1881.
The church’s grandeur is breathtaking. Its Polish Cathedral style reflects the opulence and scale of churches in Poland. The interior is vast measuring 200 feet long and 80 feet wide. It can seat 1500 people. The artwork is just as impressive. The altar painting by Tadeusz Bulatynski is a masterpiece. The stained glass windows crafted by F X Zettler of Munich Germany are exquisite. Even the chandeliers were made in the studios of Louis Comfort Tiffany.
But Saint Stanislaus Kostka is more than just beautiful architecture. It’s a living hub of faith and community. It’s open 24/7 hosting the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. Except during mass of course. This church played a vital role in the lives of Polish immigrants. It served as a center for social and cultural life. It hosted dignitaries from Poland and the United States. President Woodrow Wilson and Malgorzata Gosiewska were among them.
Sadly the church lost one of its two belfries in a lightning strike in 1970. A significant event. However a determined effort by Chicago’s Polonia saved it from demolition. The Kennedy Expressway was planned to run directly through the church. This heroic struggle saved the church for generations to come. Today masses are celebrated in English Polish and Spanish. Reflecting the church’s evolving congregation.
