In 1927, a small group of Catholic families began to gather in Depok. They yearned for spiritual nourishment, attending Mass in either Bogor or Jakarta. Gereja Katolik Santo Paulus Depok didn’t exist yet. Their devotion laid the groundwork for what would become a vibrant community. As their numbers grew, priests from Bogor began traveling to Depok in the late 1940s, holding Mass in the homes of these faithful families. These intimate gatherings became a weekly ritual, strengthening the bonds of faith within the burgeoning Catholic community. After Indonesia gained independence, many Dutch residents, including those living at Jl. Melati 4, returned to the Netherlands. This property became pivotal in the story of Gereja Katolik Santo Paulus Depok. Thanks to the determined efforts of Mgr. Dr. N. Geise, OFM, the land was purchased. In the late 1950s, Gereja Katolik Santo Paulus Depok was finally built on this site. Father J. J. Rossen became the first resident priest. He was later succeeded by Father Herkulanus Frankhuyzen. Gereja Katolik Santo Paulus Depok became a beacon of hope and faith in the growing city. As Depok expanded, so too did the need for spiritual guidance. A second church, St. Herkulanus, was built in 1977-1978 on Jalan Irian Jaya, a testament to the enduring legacy of Father Herkulanus Frankhuyzen. In the midst of this growth, Gereja Katolik Santo Paulus Depok continued to serve its community. The parish expanded its reach to surrounding areas, including Gunung Sindur, Parung, and Bojongsari. This outreach began in 1982, spearheaded by the priests of Gereja Katolik Santo Paulus Depok. They were later joined by the ADSK sisters in 1987. Gereja Katolik Santo Paulus Depok stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith. It symbolizes the growth and resilience of the Catholic community in Depok, from a small group of families to a vibrant parish serving thousands.
