Have you ever heard of the Hotel de Gramont? It once stood majestically on this very spot, where today, you see the Rue de Gramont.

This charming street in the 2nd arrondissement of Paris was built in 1765, a time when the city was bustling with growth. The Rue de Gramont is named after the former hotel that once stood there, owned by a family of noble lineage.

Back in the 1720s, the family of the deceased Marshal de Gramont found themselves needing to sell the hotel, and they cleverly proposed to King Louis XV that opening a street through the property would make it more attractive to buyers. The king granted permission, and the two streets – Rue de Gramont and Rue Ménars – were born. However, the plans for the streets were delayed for nearly 40 years, and wouldn’t be realized until the 1760s.

Interestingly, this hotel was different from the better-known Hotel de Gramont located on the Place Vendôme. The Rue de Gramont, in its early years, was a site of significant activity. It housed the first Parisian gentlemen’s club inspired by English examples, called the Cercle de la rue de Gramont, which was later shut down by the police.

The Rue de Gramont is a reminder of a bygone era in Paris, an era of nobles, hotels, and the rise of gentlemen’s clubs. It’s also a testament to the changing landscape of the city, a place where the past still echoes in the streets we walk today.
