The Ile du Fort, a small triangular island, sits serenely in the Seine River. It’s a tranquil spot, a world away from the bustling streets of Paris. This island, however, has a rich history, filled with tales of bravery and conflict. In the 14th century, the island, as its name implies, was strategically fortified by Bertrand du Guesclin, a celebrated French knight, to defend the nearby town of Meulan against the English. The imposing fort, however, eventually fell to the English forces. Today, the island remains a peaceful haven, with its main attraction being a modern hospital that stands at its tip. But the island still carries echoes of its history, its very existence a testament to the courage and resilience that once played out on its shores.
