Picture this. You are standing before the colossal Vila Olímpica. This isn’t just any housing complex. It’s the largest Olympic Village in history. Built for the 2016 Rio Olympics it housed 17950 people in 3604 apartments across 31 buildings.

The story of Vila Olímpica is intertwined with the fate of Vila Autódromo. This nearby community existed long before the Olympics. Fishermen first settled there in the 1960s. By 1975 Vila Autódromo was nestled between the Jacarepaguá racetrack and the lagoon. In 1994 residents were granted 99-year land titles.

However the Olympic Games cast a long shadow. The planned Olympic Park encroached on Vila Autódromo. Despite the land titles the city reduced the community’s size by 83%. This led to years of protests evictions and court battles. Residents fought tirelessly. They even created the People’s Plan an alternative urban development proposal.

The People’s Plan aimed to integrate Vila Autódromo into the Olympic infrastructure. It proposed new urban infrastructure a cultural center and sports fields. After much struggle the Mayor ultimately agreed to the permanence of Vila Autódromo. But the cost was high. Many homes were demolished. Families were displaced. Some residents accepted compensation or relocation. Others steadfastly refused to leave their homes.

The construction of Vila Olímpica itself was a massive undertaking. Over 18000 people worked on it. They used 430000 cubic meters of concrete and 43000 tons of steel. The buildings are LEED certified. This means that 85% of the construction waste was reused. The village also features over 16000 square meters of green roofs and 75 solar panels.

Today Vila Olímpica stands as a testament to the Olympic Games. It’s a symbol of both the triumphs and the controversies that surrounded the event. It’s also a reminder of the resilience and determination of the communities affected by the Games. The story of Vila Autódromo is woven into the very fabric of this impressive complex. It serves as a powerful reminder that even amidst great change the spirit of community and resistance can endure.
