Seems almost unreal. Belmont Park is one of the northernmost homesteads in Victoria. It sits about 320km west-northwest from Melbourne. This park stands approximately 184m above sea level.

Belmont Park offers a blend of history and recreation. It’s a place where community gathers and memories are made. Though details about its specific historical significance are sparse, its location tells a story of early settlement in Victoria.

Belmont’s surrounding areas have a rich history. Early settlers were once hampered by the lack of a secure bridge over the Barwon River. The first wooden bridge opened in 1848. It was tolled by the South Barwon Road Board. A flood swept it away four years later.

In December of that year a government punt operated at the site. By late 1853 two government punts formed a pontoon bridge. In 1859 a secure iron bridge replaced it. This facilitated the development of the township.

In 1928, 10,000 Geelong residents welcomed aviator Bert Hinkler. He had just completed a 16-day England-Australia flight. This event highlights the park’s connection to aviation history.

From 1969 to 1976, a narrow-gauge tourist railway operated on the Belmont Common. The Australian Railway Historical Society’s Geelong Division ran it. Regular flooding and construction of the Princes Highway bypass dampened enthusiasm. The railway relocated to Queenscliff.

Today, Belmont Park provides many recreational opportunities. It features an oval and a multi-purpose court. You can play tennis or soccer here. There is also a pavilion and public toilets. Large BBQ shelter and a carpark are accessible via Belmont Road East.

The park is also home to a dog obedience school. This reflects its role as a community space. It’s a place where people can connect with nature.

The extensive Belmont Common area follows the Barwon River. A path runs along both sides of the river. People can use it on foot or by bicycle. The Common houses the Barwon Valley Public Golf Course. It also has a golf driving range.

In 1952, the Barwon River flooded the entire Belmont Common area. This highlights the area’s flood-prone nature. Despite this, the park remains a vital part of the community.

So, as you explore Belmont Park, consider its past. Think about the people who have gathered here. Picture the planes taking off. Imagine the trains chugging along. This park has been shaped by nature and human activity. Belmont Park is a testament to community and recreation in Victoria.
