Reflecting sunlight dances on the surface. Welcome to Cospudener See. This artificial lake offers recreation near Leipzig. Locals often call it “Cossi.” It’s a key part of the Central German Lake District.

The lake’s name comes from Heinricus de Kozebude around 1216. The name evolved to Kospuden by 1875. Johann Sebastian Bach even mentioned Cospuden in his Peasant Cantata in 1740.

Cospuden became a lignite mine in 1974. This caused significant environmental damage. After the Wende, citizen initiatives stopped mining in 1992. Around 87 million tons of lignite were extracted.

Starting in 1994, the mine was transformed into a lake. Rainwater and water from nearby sources filled it. By 2000, the water level stabilized. Cospudener See became the first mining lake ready for reuse in the Leipzig Neuseenland. Its proximity to Leipzig made it a model for post-mining landscapes. Expo 2000 played a vital role in its revitalization.

Today, Cospudener See is a leisure destination. Artificial beaches line the north and east shores. A marina called Zörbigker Hafen sits to the east. Wooded areas grace the west and south. A sauna and golf course add to the attractions. People sail, windsurf, and kitesurf here. A 14 km path circles the lake. It is popular for walkers, cyclists, and skaters. Nudism is permitted. The area is a nature reserve.

A canal links the lake to Leipzig’s waterways. You can navigate to the forest lake Lauer. The canal connects to the Pleiße and White Elster rivers. A connection to Zwenkauer See is planned but faces funding issues. This network aims to connect several lakes for water tourism.

The Bistumshöhe tower offers views. It stands 35 meters tall. From there you can see the lake, Belantis amusement park and Leipzig’s towers. Bisons graze nearby.

Getting here is easy. There is a large free parking lot on Brückenstraße. Bus lines connect to the north beach and Zöbigker Hafen. You can even take a boat tour on the MS Cospuden. It has been sailing since 2000.

In 2003, the project earned recognition. Leipzig A Second Nature Landscape Cospuden was shortlisted for an architecture award.

Cospudener See exemplifies transformation. From a mine to a beloved lake. It’s a testament to nature and recreation. Enjoy the views. Enjoy the water. Enjoy Cossi.
