“Did you know that the Gibbs Museum of Pioneer and Dakotah Life isn’t just a collection of old buildings? It’s a portal back to a time when Minnesota was a wild frontier.”

The Gibbs Museum stands here as a testament to the intertwined lives of pioneers and the Dakotah people. The museum compares the lives of Minnesota pioneers with those of the Dakotah Indians who lived in the region. It is located in Falcon Heights Minnesota.

Let’s step back to 1849. Jane and Heman Gibbs, after marrying in Illinois, bought land here. They unknowingly settled on land that was part of the Dakotah’s annual migration route. Imagine their surprise when Dakotah people, whom Jane knew from her childhood, camped on their property.

Jane had a unique connection with the Dakotah. As a child, she lived with missionaries near Fort Snelling and learned their language and culture. The Dakotah even gave her the name Zitkadan Usawin, meaning Little Crow that was Caught. The Gibbs Museum reflects Jane Gibbs’s friendship with the Dakotah. The Dakotah camped on the site as they headed north to gather wild rice.

For five years, the Gibbs family lived in a small sod house. This dugout was their first home on the prairie. In 1854, they built a one-room farmhouse. As their family grew, they expanded it into an eight-room house in 1867.

Heman Gibbs believed in education. He allowed classes to be held in his farmhouse. Later, he donated land for a schoolhouse. The schoolhouse on the museum grounds isn’t the original, though. It represents a typical pioneer one-room schoolhouse.

Today, the Gibbs Museum is an open-air museum. It features the original farmhouse, barn, and schoolhouse. You’ll also find a replica sod house, bark lodge, and tipi. Costumed interpreters bring the past to life.

Inside the farmhouse, discover 19th-century artifacts. The family hair wreath, original wallpaper, and a concealed murphy bed offer glimpses into pioneer life.

Outside, explore a natural Minnesota prairie and Dakotah gardens. A heritage apple orchard and farm animals complete the scene. The Gibbs Farm also has a Dakotah medicine teaching garden called the turtle garden. They also have a Dakotah vegetable garden. In addition they have a pioneer vegetable garden.

The Gibbs Museum offers special programs and school tours. During summer weekends, the museum opens its doors to the public. Don’t miss the special programs every Sunday. One-day schoolhouse programs for kids are offered in July and August.

The Gibbs Museum isn’t just a place to see old things. It’s a place to connect with the stories of the past. It’s a reminder of the challenges and triumphs of those who shaped Minnesota. It highlights the friendship between the Gibbs family and the Dakotah people. It is a friendship that transcended cultural differences. It is a testament to the power of human connection.
