Hidden deep within Waiheke Island’s embrace lies Stony Batter Historic Reserve. This isn’t just any reserve. It’s a portal to a pivotal moment in New Zealand’s history.

Stony Batter is a Category 1 Historic Place a testament to wartime ingenuity and resilience. Imagine a time of global conflict. The year is 1943. Auckland’s shores needed protection. A secret project began. Stony Batter was born.

The construction wasn’t easy. The remote location presented challenges. There was no road access. Secrecy shrouded the work. Workers lived on site. They even built their own machine shops. The name A2 concealed Stony Batter’s true identity.

The tunnels and chambers were carved by hand. Workers used formwork for the walls and ceilings. Then they filled the spaces with concrete. Reinforcing steel was scarce. The rock itself gave Stony Batter its name. The design mirrored plans for the Tawa Flat railway tunnels.

The project’s cost soared. Initial estimates of 140000 pounds ballooned to over 327000 pounds. That doesn’t include the cost of the guns. By 1945 the immediate threat had lessened. Many workers moved on to build hydroelectric plants.

Only two 9.2-inch naval guns were ever installed. Their range extended over 30 kilometers. They could swivel 360 degrees and elevate to 35 degrees. They were the largest guns ever used in New Zealand. The guns were eventually sold for scrap.

A long legal battle ensued. A nearby landowner blocked public access for years. Theft of his livestock jeopardized his business. The dispute finally ended in 2002. The Privy Council sided with the council granting public access to Stony Batter.

Today Stony Batter stands as a powerful reminder of a bygone era. Explore the extensive tunnel system. Walk in the footsteps of those who built this remarkable fortress. Discover the ingenuity that shaped Stony Batter into a unique and unforgettable place. Stony Batter Historic Reserve awaits.
