Robert Hammond was a wealthy brewer. He wanted to provide education for local children. His will established a “free scole”. This school was to be in the churchyard of St Mary’s Church. Hammond’s endowment included the Bell Inn and some land.
Hampton School’s early days were not without challenges. The school briefly closed in 1568. It reopened in 1612 due to Nicholas Pigeon’s generosity.
The school’s location has changed over time. It moved from St Mary’s Church to Upper Sunbury Road in 1880. In 1939, Hampton School found its current home on Hanworth Road. The foundation stone was laid in 1938.
Hampton School became a fee-paying private school in 1975. Before that, it was a voluntary-aided grammar school. Today, Hampton School charges over £26,040 per year.
Hampton School is known for its academic excellence. In 2021, 92% of pupils achieved A* or A at A-Level. It consistently ranks high among UK fee-paying schools.
Hampton School has a preparatory school. It caters to girls aged 3–7 and boys aged 3–11. The school co-operates with The Lady Eleanor Holles School. They share facilities and activities.
Founders’ Day is a special occasion at Hampton School. Boys walk from the school to St Mary’s Church. There is a service with the school choir. It commemorates Robert Hammond’s vision.
The Hampton Mulberry tree has a special place in the school’s history. It was planted in the Cloisters in 1939. The Lion reported that it could live for centuries.
Many notable individuals attended Hampton School. Brian May is one of the most famous alumni. He was a member of the rock band Queen. Paul Casey is a professional golfer. Kenneth Baker served as Home Secretary.
