What if these walls could talk? Welcome to Klostervangen in Aarhus. Here stand two apartment blocks. They are testaments to a history rooted in this very ground.

Klostervangen gets its name from a past era. The monastery in Vestergade once owned this land. Imagine monks walking these fields centuries ago.

But the story doesn’t end there. Fast forward to the mid-1800s. Langballes Teglværk dug for clay here until 1917. This created large pits in the landscape. These pits then transformed into allotments. They thrived until 1960. Visualize small gardens bursting with life.

Then came Arbejdernes Andels Boligforening. They are also known as AAB. They erected these high-rises from 1964 to 1968. The buildings rose from the old clay pits. Architects A. Gravers and Knud Blach Petersen designed this construction project.

The taller block faces Langelandsgade. It stands sixteen stories high. That is 48 meters tall. It houses 160 apartments. The other block faces Grønnegade. It rises to twelve floors. It is 37 meters in height. This building contains 220 apartments. Klostervangen provides homes for many.

The AAB has managed these residences since its founding in 1911. The original aim was to administer housing. It started with just 58 homes. Now they oversee over 8000. That shows huge growth.

But time takes its toll. By 1987, Klostervangen needed help. The balcony facades were falling apart. A major renovation transformed the complex. Steel plates clad the buildings. The balconies became enclosed.

Another major renovation occurred from 2014 to 2022. This included new climate screens. Workers covered the balcony walkways. They insulated gables, roofs, and decks. This protected against unheated basement spaces. They also did extensive concrete repairs. Existing balcony walkways gained reinforcement. This renovation also included environmental remediation.

Klostervangen stands as a landmark in Aarhus C. It reflects different eras. From monastic land to clay pits. Then from allotments to modern housing. These buildings offer more than just shelter. They offer a tangible link to Aarhus’s past. Take a moment to appreciate the layers of history beneath our feet.
