Imagine Montevideo then a city on the rise. Emilio Reus a Spanish financier envisioned a luxurious hotel. He planned it as part of a grand complex. This complex would feature medical and hydrotherapy facilities. The location was the southern edge of the Ciudad Vieja.
Reus commissioned architect Juan Tosi in 1888. Tosi designed a magnificent structure. Construction of the Hotel Nacional de Montevideo began. The year was 1890. The hotel seemed destined for greatness.
But fate intervened. The financial crisis of 1890 struck. Reus’s company went bankrupt. The Hotel Nacional de Montevideo never opened its doors. Its grand opening was canceled.
For years the unfinished building stood empty. Then in 1895 the state acquired the Hotel Nacional. It was repurposed as a university building. Various faculties found a home here. The faculties of Mathematics and Architecture moved in first. Later the Faculty of Humanities and Sciences took over.
For many years students filled its halls. Knowledge and learning thrived within its walls. However, by 1973 the building began to deteriorate. The grand Hotel Nacional de Montevideo was slowly falling into disrepair.
In 1996 the Hotel Nacional was declared a National Historical Monument. This recognized its architectural and historical significance. Yet, this designation could not stop its decline.
In 2007, there was a glimmer of hope. The Greek shipping company Tsakos purchased the building at auction. A multi-million dollar project was planned. It aimed to transform the Hotel Nacional de Montevideo. The Greek financial crisis put an end to these plans.
Today the Hotel Nacional de Montevideo remains unoccupied. It is a reminder of unfulfilled dreams. It stands as a testament to the boom and bust cycles of history. Its unique architecture still impresses. It occupies an entire block. The Hotel Nacional is located between Cerrito Monteverde Piedras and Juan Lindolfo Cuestas streets.
The building covers over 2400 square meters. Its construction spans over 10000 square meters. The Hotel Nacional de Montevideo has four floors and it reaches a height of 17 meters.
