Time leaped forward. The year is 1211. We stand before the very spot where the history of Groβ Ippener began. Right here a noble Aldagus de Ippenerde witnessed a significant event. A certificate from Bassum abbey mentioned his name. This marked the first documented appearance of Ippener. Not as a town but a personal name a place a parish.
Groβ Ippener a name whispered through centuries. It wasn’t always the municipality we know today. Initially it was a collection of smaller settlements. Klein Ippener Annen and Ortholz joined together in 1859. They formed the overarching municipality of Groβ Ippener.
The heart of old Groβ Ippener pulsed near the location of today’s Wülfers restaurant. A parish church once stood there. It served the community for generations. Sadly this church fell victim to the ravages of the Thirty Years’ War. It burned down and was never rebuilt. A poignant reminder of the turbulent times that shaped this land. Through the years Groβ Ippener evolved. It moved from the Freudenberg district to the Grafschaft Hoya. Then in 1974 a local government reform occurred. Groβ Ippener along with eight others formed the Samtgemeinde Harpstedt. This became part of the district of Oldenburg.
Groβ Ippener’s location is strategic. It sits beside the A1 Autobahn. This is a major thoroughfare between Bremen and Osnabrück. The nearby Autobahn brought a new type of development.
