Imagine standing atop Trutzsch, nearly 200 meters above Dresden. The wind whispers tales of ancient settlements and battles fought long ago. Today, we explore this unassuming hill. It holds secrets from Dresden’s distant past.

Trutzsch, once called Trützsch, offers a stunning panoramic view. The Elbe Valley stretches before you. You can see Dresden’s inner city. Prohlis’s housing blocks stand closer. The Elbe slopes rise. The TV tower and Pillnitz vineyards complete the view. On clear days, the Saxon Switzerland appears in the east.

But Trutzsch is more than a viewpoint. It’s a place steeped in history. Around 1300 BC, the area was settled by the Lausitz culture. This was a proto-Slavic group. In 1939, workers found urn graves while building an exercise ground. These graves dated back to 1300-200 BC.

During the 6th and 7th centuries BC, the Billendorf culture lived here. Later, a Slavic fort stood here. Around 500 meters west of the graves, archaeologists discovered a bronze arm ring. This suggests contact with Celtic tribes in Bohemia. The name Trutzsch comes from Slavic settlers. They moved into the Elbe Valley between the 8th and 10th centuries.

In the Middle Ages, the hill had another name. Part of Trutzsch was known as Galgenberg. The lords of Lockwitz had high jurisdiction. They could impose the death penalty. The gallows stood on Galgenberg.

Until 1993, Trutzsch was off-limits. Soviet troops occupied the area. After they left, the Stesad redesigned the area. Buildings were torn down. Surfaces were unsealed. Hedges were planted. Dry stone walls were built. An orchard was created. A viewing point was constructed. Since 2018, sheep graze on Trutzsch. They keep the vegetation under control.

Today, Trutzsch is a romantic destination. It offers peace, city views, and starry nights. Some say it’s an insider tip. You might even find yourself alone under the stars.

Trutzsch is also part of the Archaeo-Pfad Dresden. This path highlights the area’s bronze and iron age finds. The hill itself has geological significance. About 95 million years ago, this area was covered by a sea. Chalk sandstone formed the base of the hill. Glaciers shaped the landscape 350,000 years ago.

As you leave Trutzsch, remember its layers of history. From ancient graves to Slavic settlements, from gallows to Soviet occupation, and now a peaceful viewpoint. Trutzsch stands as a silent witness to Dresden’s story.
