Did a poker game ever decide the fate of a building? Right here, at Palazzo Corpi, a high-stakes hand dealt a winning blow for American diplomacy. Palazzo Corpi stands as a testament to a gamble that paid off, transforming a Genoese merchant’s dream into a cornerstone of US foreign policy. This grand palazzo, nestled in Istanbul’s Beyoğlu district, first took shape between 1873 and 1882. Genoese merchant Ignazio Corpi envisioned a magnificent residence, and Italian architect Giacomo Leoni brought his vision to life. Sadly, Corpi passed away just as the palazzo neared completion.

The Corpi family then leased the palazzo to the United States legation to the Ottoman Empire in 1882. Years later, in 1907, Ambassador John George Alexander Leishman saw an opportunity. He purchased Palazzo Corpi with his own funds, a hefty 28,000 liras, believing the US government would readily reimburse him. However, the government balked, deeming the purchase a personal expense. Leishman, a man of wit and daring, devised an unconventional solution. He invited members of Congress to a poker game, wagering that if he won, the government would cover the cost of the palazzo. Fortune favored the bold. Leishman won the hand, and Palazzo Corpi became the first diplomatic premises owned by the United States in Europe.

The palazzo served as the US Embassy until 1937, after which it housed the US Consulate General until 2003. The interior of Palazzo Corpi is a visual feast. Imported marble from Carrara gleams under the Turkish sun. Frescoes depicting scenes from Greek and Roman mythology adorn the main hall. These artworks, painted over during a 1937 renovation, have been painstakingly restored, their vibrant colors echoing tales of gods and heroes. In 2014, a new chapter began for Palazzo Corpi. Soho House took over the building, transforming it into a stylish hotel and conference center while preserving its historic charm. The Hollings Center, established to promote dialogue between the US and the Middle East, also maintains offices within its walls. Palazzo Corpi’s story is a unique blend of Italian artistry, American diplomacy, and a touch of good luck. It stands as a reminder that sometimes, a daring gamble can yield the most rewarding of outcomes.
