Imagine stepping back in time, to a world where charity and compassion were the driving forces behind the construction of grand buildings. Here, in the heart of Richmond, stands Houblon’s Almshouses, a testament to the enduring legacy of two remarkable sisters.

Built in the 18th century, these humble yet dignified dwellings were the brainchild of Rebecca and Susanna Houblon, daughters of Sir John Houblon, the very first Governor of the Bank of England. Their father’s wealth and influence allowed them to establish a haven for nine impoverished women who had been brought up in the Protestant faith.

The story of Houblon’s Almshouses mirrors the changing tides of history, with the original nine dwellings being expanded to 11 in 1857. Now, these peaceful havens continue to provide housing for deserving seniors, carrying on the spirit of charity and benevolence established by the Houblon sisters.

Standing here, it’s hard not to be touched by the history that breathes life into these stone walls. You can almost hear the whispered stories of the women who once called this place home, their struggles and triumphs echoing through the corridors of time. They were women seeking refuge, a safe haven where they could live out their later years in dignity.

Houblon’s Almshouses are a powerful reminder that even in a world driven by ambition and wealth, compassion and kindness can leave a lasting impact. Their survival through the centuries is a testament to the enduring power of these virtues.
