What does it mean to be “Sedia”? Here at Bukit Merah Secondary School, it means “Always be Prepared”. Bukit Merah Secondary School embodies this motto, navigating a history of mergers and growth, constantly adapting to the changing needs of its students and community. Bukit Merah Secondary School first opened its doors on January 4, 1968, as the 101st government-built school. The school was officially inaugurated by Lim Guan Hoo, the then Member of Parliament for Bukit Merah, on May 16 of the same year. The school initially offered classes in both English and Chinese. Fast forward to 1984, Bukit Merah Secondary School transitioned to become a solely English-medium institution. The school’s crest symbolizes this journey. The red triangle represents Bukit Merah, meaning “red hill” in Malay. The insignia “BM” nestled within cleverly mirrors the calligraphy of the Chinese characters for “hongshan” (red hill), a nod to its bilingual past. The upward flash symbolizes progress and the motto “Sedia”. The school’s journey took another turn in 2001. St. Thomas Secondary School merged with Bukit Merah Secondary School, necessitating a move to a temporary location while a new campus was built on Lengkok Bahru. This new, modern facility opened in 2004, the same year Delta Secondary School also joined Bukit Merah Secondary School. The most recent merger occurred in 2017, when Henderson Secondary School became a part of Bukit Merah Secondary School. This integration brought strategic depth, expanding the range of programs available to students. Interestingly, while retaining “Bukit Merah Secondary School” as its English name, the school adopted Henderson Secondary School’s Chinese name, “Da Shan Zhong Xue”. This reflects the school’s commitment to honoring the legacies of all the schools that have become part of its rich tapestry. Today, Bukit Merah Secondary School continues to thrive, offering Express, Normal Academic, and Normal Technical streams. Its alumni include notable figures like Pritam Singh, Leader of the Opposition, and Mediacorp personalities Jeremy Chan and Nick Shen. The school’s focus on character development and leadership through sports, especially its renowned floorball program, prepares students not just for exams but for life. Bukit Merah Secondary School is more than just a school. It is a testament to the power of adaptation, growth, and the enduring spirit of “Sedia”.
