Have you ever heard of the noble knights who once dominated this landscape? Right here, standing in Aumund-Hammersbeck, you are on ground once ruled by the powerful lords of Oumünde. Back in 1144, the first of these knights, a man named Diedrich, was mentioned in records as part of the Archbishop’s distinguished circle. Their presence wasn’t all sunshine and roses, though. Just like their neighbors, their ambition burdened the local people with heavy taxes and demands. Aumund, the older and more western part of Aumund-Hammersbeck, dates back to the year 1040, when a village called Aunon was documented. Even though both Aumund and Hammersbeck were initially agricultural centers, they saw a slow but steady growth in industry and business, particularly in Hammersbeck. This was due to the unique location on the “Bremer Schweiz,” a region with abundant trees. This abundance attracted companies, especially those involved in brick and wood processing. In fact, many factories and businesses set up shop in the Borchshöhe area, drawing a significant population increase. Despite Aumund’s earlier history, Hammersbeck emerged in 1581 as Amelsbäke. Its name is believed to be derived from a farm owned by a man named Hammer, who hailed from East Friesland. Both locations were under the control of the Blumenthal Lordship. Aumund-Hammersbeck has transformed from a simple village into a bustling residential area in the last two centuries. Many wetlands were reclaimed to accommodate the growing population, and the A270 motorway and the Aumund train station have both contributed to the rapid population increase. So as you stand here, remember the history of Aumund-Hammersbeck, a place rich in history and transformation. It’s a testament to the enduring strength of a community that adapted to changing times and built a future based on its past.
