Established in 1953 Tanjong Katong Girls’ School stands as a testament to Singapore’s educational history. It wasn’t just any school. It was the first post-war government English girls’ school built in Singapore. Imagine the excitement the opening in 1954 must have generated. The school started with seven classes and 250 pupils. Ten teachers guided these pioneers in their studies.
Tanjong Katong Girls’ School quickly grew in popularity. By 1960 it had become a double-session school. This was necessary to accommodate the increasing number of students. The number of students grew to a staggering 1200 that same year. Maude Scott the school’s founding principal passed the torch to See Tin See. The school continued to expand and evolve. In 1962 it became an integrated school teaching Chinese alongside English.
The school wasn’t just a place for learning. Tanjong Katong Girls’ School played a crucial role in teacher training. It hosted trainees from the Teachers’ Training Course. It also served as a practical workshop for Home Economics students. In the late 1970s the school implemented innovative immersion programs. These helped students from Chinese-medium schools transition into an English-speaking environment. Tanjong Katong Girls’ School even became a Music Elective Programme centre. This was a valuable resource for students whose schools lacked adequate music facilities.
Expansion continued into the 1960s. A new four-storey block was added in 1966. This included science labs classrooms and special rooms. The domestic science block gained a new cookery room. The school canteen was enlarged to serve the ever-growing student body. By 1967 Pre-University classes began. This further swelled the school’s enrolment to an impressive 2000 students. The school became known for its academic excellence. In 1975 a Tanjong Katong Girls’ School student achieved top marks in the Singapore-Cambridge GCE Ordinary Level examination.
The school continued to excel in various fields. Tanjong Katong Girls’ School’s band won the School Band Competition in 1972. Its debating team triumphed in the Inter-School Debate Series in 1973. Tanjong Katong Girls’ School was selected by the Ministry of Education to offer the Music Elective Programme in 1983. It was one of only four schools in Singapore to offer music as an examinable ‘O’ Level subject. The school also moved to a new campus in 1995. Its official opening was in 1997. The ‘Spirit of TKGS’ a remarkable sculpture was unveiled during the opening ceremony. This commemorates the school’s legacy and aspirations. Tanjong Katong Girls’ School achieved autonomous status further solidifying its position as a leading educational institution. Its legacy continues today with many notable alumnae including the eighth President of Singapore. The school continues its mission to foster academic excellence and holistic development. Today Tanjong Katong Girls’ School remains a vibrant centre of learning a proud symbol of Singapore’s educational achievements.
