Right here on Seward Park Avenue South, Rainier Beach High School has been a beacon of athletic and academic achievement since it opened its doors in 1960. Originally called Rainier Beach Junior-Senior High School, this institution has witnessed a fascinating evolution, marked by both triumphs and challenges. Rainier Beach High School quickly outgrew its initial design for 1,500 students, reaching over 2,000 students by 1967. This overcrowding led to the creation of separate middle school facilities. The school became a hub of innovation, developing a K-12 individualized program in 1968 that served as a model for other inner-city schools. Rainier Beach High School continued to break new ground. An aviation class built an experimental plane from 1975 to 1983, eventually auctioning it off for over $3,000. The school also housed a Model Teaching Academy, preparing students for careers in education. And in 1988, Rainier Beach High School became the first in the district with a Teen Health Center. Of course, no story of Rainier Beach High School would be complete without mentioning its legendary basketball program. The Vikings have brought home nine state championships, cementing their place as a powerhouse in Washington high school basketball. In 2002, the men’s team even held the number one ranking in the entire country for a brief, shining moment. Rainier Beach High School also faced periods of difficulty. Enrollment declined in the 1990s, leading to community protests and a change in leadership. In 2008, the school faced a potential closure, but the community rallied to keep its doors open. Despite the challenges, Rainier Beach High School has persevered, consistently striving to provide a quality education for its students. The International Baccalaureate program, introduced in 2013, offers a rigorous and enriching academic pathway.
