Hidden within the vibrant tapestry of Parque Chas lies Plaza Capitán Domingo Fidel Sarmiento. Do you know the story behind this tranquil oasis? This plaza isn’t just a patch of green. It’s a living testament to a young hero, Captain Domingo Fidel Sarmiento, the adopted son of the renowned Domingo Faustino Sarmiento. Plaza Capitán Domingo Fidel Sarmiento was inaugurated on September 22, 1967, marking the 101st anniversary of Dominguito’s death. The plaza’s creation was more than just commemorating a date. It was a tribute to a life cut short, a life dedicated to service and sacrifice. Dominguito, a bright young man with a promising future, abandoned his law studies to fight for his country in the War of the Triple Alliance. He fought bravely, ultimately falling in the Battle of Curupaytí in 1866. Plaza Capitán Domingo Fidel Sarmiento wasn’t always known by this name. Originally, it was dedicated to Dr. Vicente Chas, the visionary behind the unique circular design of Parque Chas. The land for the plaza, nestled within the circular maze of streets, was donated to the city during the 1927 Parque Chas development. Back then, developers were required to set aside land for public spaces like plazas, schools, and churches. These designated areas were known as “Reserva Fiscal,” preventing private ownership. The plaza, bordered by Berlín, Gándara, Gamarra, and Marsella streets, stands as a quiet sanctuary within the bustling city. Over the years, Plaza Capitán Domingo Fidel Sarmiento has undergone renovations. Modern playground equipment, sturdy cement benches and tables, and lush greenery invite visitors to relax and reflect. As you stroll through Plaza Capitán Domingo Fidel Sarmiento, remember the young captain whose name it bears. His story is woven into the fabric of this unique neighborhood, a reminder of courage, sacrifice, and the enduring power of memory.
