Beneath the Jakarta sky, stands Masjid Al-Manar. Its story is not just about bricks and mortar. It is a testament to faith, resilience, and the spirit of Indonesian independence.

Masjid Al-Manar, originally named Masjid Jami Kampung Sawah, dates back to 1717. Raden Abdul Malik, also known as Prince Cakrajaya Adiningrat, founded it. He envisioned it as a place of worship. It would be a center for community education against invaders.

The story of Masjid Al-Manar is intertwined with the struggle for independence. Under the leadership of KH. Mohammad Mansyur, the mosque played a role. Mansyur was a Betawi figure who fought against Dutch colonial rule.

During 1947-1948, a fierce gunfight erupted. Nationalist forces clashed with NICA soldiers. Mansur bravely tried to raise the Red-and-White flag. He wanted to hoist it on the mosque’s minarets.

After Mohammad Mansyur’s death in 1967, the mosque was renamed Masjid Jami al-Mansyur. It was a tribute to his contributions. In 1972, it was listed as a cultural heritage object.

The main hall of Masjid Al-Manar is the oldest part of the building. It measures 12 by 14.40 meters. Four solid pillars stand prominently in the middle. The bottom of the columns is octagonal. The main stem is round and decorated with seams.

Wooden beams support two stairs. These stairs lead to the attic. The roof of the mosque is a limasan, a traditional Javanese style. The tower stands 12 meters tall. It features terraces with iron fences. The minaret is topped with a semicircular dome.

Guru Mansur, as he was known, was a respected Betawi figure. He was known for his knowledge and authority. His ancestors were also renowned scholars. In 1925, he resisted the demolition of Masjid Al-Makmur. He even faced intimidation for raising the Indonesian flag.

Today, Masjid Al-Manar stands as a symbol of Jakarta’s rich history. It embodies the fusion of Javanese, Chinese, Arab, and Betawi cultures. The architecture reflects this blend. The mosque continues to serve as a place of worship and a reminder of the past.

So, as you stand before Masjid Al-Manar, remember its story. Remember the struggle for independence. Appreciate the cultural heritage it represents. Masjid Al-Manar is more than a building. It is a living testament to Jakarta’s vibrant history.
