Standing here before El Socors, you might not immediately grasp the layers of history. El Socors rises in Palma’s Sa Gerreria. This is one of Palma’s emerging and most symbolic neighborhoods.

Let’s delve into the story of this captivating church. El Socors’ history traces back to the 15th century. Augustinian monks arrived in Mallorca and established their first monastery outside the city walls.

In the 17th century, they started building the present convent. It grew around the old church of Nuestra Señora de Gracia. El Socors now stands as a testament to their enduring presence.

The church boasts a single nave. Two side chapels feature upper corridors enclosed by balustrades. Inside, the baroque-style main altarpiece is a highlight. Famous artist Juan Francisco Aragón designed it in the 18th century.

Notice the Marian sculptures. These date from the 15th to the 18th centuries. Among them are Nuestra Señora del Socorro made from alabaster. Also, you can see sculptures of Pilar, Esperanza and Itria. The image of the Sleeping Virgin is another highlight.

One of the most spectacular features is the chapel of San Nicolás de Tolentino. Sculptor Francisco Herrera designed it. The chapel has an extended octagonal floor. It contains seven altars.

Its heavily decorated dome is inspired by horror vacui. This visual art ideology fills every space with detail. It is one of the most expressive examples of Baroque art in Mallorca.

El Socors also has a connection to an earlier chapel. This chapel was known as Nostra Dona de Gràcia. It was once located in the area called El Socorrador. Medieval documents mention it as a peripheral area of the city.

Bishop Gil Sánchez Muñoz initiated the construction of the single-nave building. He was the Antipope Clement VIII of Avignon. The bishop’s coat of arms can be seen on one of the keystones. Guillem Sagrera and Huguet Barxa were involved in the construction. Little remains of the original building. However, the Gothic portal still shows traces of Sagrera’s work.

In 1544, the Augustinian monks moved their foundation inside the city. Initially, the Chapel of Nostra Dona de Gràcia provided them shelter. Later, it became part of their Baroque church.

Today, El Socors stands as more than just a church. It represents centuries of faith. It showcases artistic brilliance. It serves as a peaceful haven in a bustling city. Take a moment to appreciate the blend of history and art. Let the stories of El Socors resonate with you.
