Gazing upon Longfield and New Barn today, it’s hard to imagine this tranquil Kent village as the potential site of a bustling new town. Longfield and New Barn, a name that echoes across the centuries, holds a history far richer than its quiet present suggests. In the mid-1940s, town planner Patrick Abercrombie envisioned a transformation. As part of the Greater London Plan, he proposed a new town right here in the Longfield area. Imagine the change, the urban sprawl replacing these rolling fields. Thankfully, for those who cherish its charm, other locations were chosen, leaving Longfield and New Barn to breathe and retain its village character. The name itself speaks to its origins. Longfield, mentioned as Langanfelda in Saxon Charters between 964 and 995 and as Langafel in the Domesday Book of 1086, simply means “long field”. This “long field” sits nestled between Dartford and Gravesend, a linear settlement extending into the neighboring village of Hartley. The civil parish of Longfield and New Barn encompasses the villages themselves and the smaller settlement of Longfield Hill. While New Barn boasts a larger population, Longfield retains the historical heart of the area. The ancient village, situated on the road from Dartford to Meopham, houses the historic St. Mary Magdalene Church, a testament to Longfield’s enduring spirit. The church, a Grade II* listed building, has witnessed centuries of Longfield’s history, from its Norman origins in the 11th century through additions in the 13th and 14th centuries, and even Victorian restorations. While the church may have once been described as “small” and “mean”, its resilience and the echoes of generations within its walls paint a more compelling picture. Longfield even has a railway connection, initially named “Fawkham for Hartley and Longfield” despite its location within the village. The station, opened in 1872, offers a link to London and beyond, a modern convenience brushing against the ancient history of Longfield and New Barn. From a potential new town to a peaceful village, Longfield and New Barn has carved its own unique path through time.
