Did you know that Niedervieland was once part of a larger territory? This is a story of division, protection, and the blending of nature and industry. Niedervieland is not an official district of Bremen. It lies within Seehausen, Strom, Rablinghausen, Woltmershausen and Neustädter Hafen.

Let’s step back in time to 1598. Goh Vieland split. It divided into Niedervieland and Obervieland. Obervieland was south of the Ochtum. Villages like Ware, Woltmershausen, Strom, Rablinghausen, Lankenau, Seehausen, and Hasenbüren became part of Niedervieland.

Niedervieland’s history includes a constant battle against flooding. In 1598, the area formed a self-governing dike association. This group worked to defend the land. In 1947, it joined the larger Bremischen Deichverband. This safeguarded the left bank of the Weser River.

Today, Niedervieland shows contrasts. Much of its open space became a protected landscape in 2006. The Ochtumniederung nature reserve also protects areas near the Ochtum. These protect the 1,331-hectare Niedervieland bird sanctuary.

Yet, Niedervieland also hosts Bremen’s industrial areas. These include Niedervieland I and II, the Güterverkehrszentrum Bremen, and the Neustädter Hafen. Planned extensions to the A 281 and B 212n will further change the area.

But there is still so much to discover here. Experience the Weser tide. At the Tidebiotop Vorder-/Hinterwerder, you can cross the ford when the water is low. But be careful. It can be slippery.

Birdwatchers find joy here. The Rastpolder Duntzenwerder is a valuable resting area. From February to April, the dike offers great viewing opportunities.

Don’t miss the Ochtumsperrwerk. This floodgate has two large lifting gates. These close off the Ochtum from the Weser during high water. This system protects the Unterweser area.

Notice the mix of nature and industry. See the steel plant to the north. Look east to the Baggergutdeponie and GVZ. Strom lines cross the landscape to the west and south. During breeding season, observe the Great Curlews’ displays.

Look for stork nests on power poles. You can easily spot the nests on the poles from the dike. Watch the storks fly to and from their feeding grounds.

Finally, find the old Wurt of Stelle. It is surrounded by the Mühlenhauser Fleet. Its elevated position is still visible. Niedervieland offers a blend of nature and industry. It reminds us of the constant need to protect our land.
