Is this where a tale of two cities unfolds? Not quite, but Le Plessis-Trévise has a story woven from pieces of other places. Born in 1899, Le Plessis-Trévise was a fusion of land from La Queue-en-Brie, Chennevières-sur-Marne, and Villiers-sur-Marne. Its very name is a blend of local and far-flung influences. “Plessis” refers to the traditional hedgerows that once guarded the area. “Trévise,” however, takes us on a journey to Italy. It honors Marshal Mortier, bestowed with the title Duke of Treviso by Napoleon himself. Imagine the marshal, a hero of Friedland, walking these very streets, perhaps dreaming of Italian sunshine. Le Plessis-Trévise remained largely untouched by its grand destiny until the mid-20th century. A call for aid during the harsh winter of 1954 sparked a dramatic transformation. Architect Pierre Dufau was tasked with creating the “Cité de la Joie” a housing project to shelter those left vulnerable by the elements. This marked the beginning of Le Plessis-Trévise as we see it today. From humble hedgerows to a city bearing the name of an Italian dukedom, Le Plessis-Trévise is a testament to the unexpected turns of history.
