In 1976, a new chapter began in Fukuoka’s educational landscape. The 市立片江小学校, or Kateage Elementary School, opened its doors. It was carved from existing schools, Kinzan and Nanatsuji Elementary. Just a year later, in 1977, Kateage Elementary played a role in the birth of another school, Minamikatae Elementary. Today, as you stand before Kateage Elementary, imagine the generations of children who have passed through these halls. The laughter, the learning, the friendships forged within these walls. In 2021, Kateage Elementary housed 20 regular classes and three special needs classes, known as “Cosmos classes”. Nearly 600 students filled the classrooms with their energy and dreams. Their homes are scattered throughout the designated school district, encompassing areas like Nishikatae and Katae, along with parts of Shoanji and Matsuyama. This district, a vibrant mix of residential areas and bustling businesses, is bordered by major roads. To the north lies the bustling Fuku-dai-dori, lined with roadside shops. To the south, the Fukuoka Expressway and the Fukuoka Outer Ring Road carve their paths. To the west, the proximity of Fukuoka University brings a youthful vibrancy, with student apartments and shops catering to their needs. Within this dynamic district, essential community facilities are woven into the fabric of daily life. The Jonan Civic Pool offers recreation and respite. The Sakura Hospital provides healthcare services. The Jonan Civic Center and Library stand as hubs of knowledge and community engagement. And the ever-vigilant Jonan Fire Department ensures the safety and well-being of all. Kateage Elementary is more than just a school. It’s a testament to the growth and evolution of Fukuoka City, a place where education and community intertwine.
