Rising majestically in Alam Sutera Gereja Katolik Santo Laurensius stands as a testament to faith. Its neo-gothic architecture is breathtaking. This church isn’t just a building. It’s a story of community perseverance.
Initially envisioned in 2004 the need for a new church became apparent. The existing Santa Monika Church in Serpong was overflowing. Rapid development in Alam Sutera and Gading Serpong demanded a new place of worship. This collaboration between the Serpong parish Alam Sutera developers and the Keuskupan Agung Jakarta was remarkable. Securing permits was surprisingly swift. The Bupati Tangerang issued a permit in May 2005. Construction began soon after. Father Antonius Suprapto spearheaded the initial efforts.
The cornerstone was laid in September 2005. The Ordo Salib Suci OSC initially oversaw the pastoral care. Father Donatus Manalu became the first pastor. The church’s roof was completed in July 2007. Services began in November 2007. They were held at the nearby Santa Laurensia School. The first Christmas Eve mass was celebrated in the church’s hall.
Four years later in May 2009 the church was dedicated. Cardinal Julius Darmaatmadja presided over the ceremony. It coincided with Ascension Day. The rectory was blessed in 2011. The same year a Gua Maria Penuh Rahmat was dedicated. In 2012 Archbishop Suharyo elevated Alam Sutera’s status from a mission to a full parish. It became the 62nd parish in the Keuskupan Agung Jakarta.
Further expansions followed. A pastoral center was completed in 2014. That same year diocesan priests assumed pastoral care. A statue of Saint Laurentius was unveiled in 2016. It stands proudly in the church plaza. The church continues to expand its facilities. It includes a chapel for adoration and statues of various saints. Even a statue of a homeless Jesus adorns the grounds.
Today Gereja Katolik Santo Laurensius stands as a vibrant community hub. It is a testament to the faith and dedication of its people. It’s a place of worship and a center for spiritual growth. The church’s history reflects the dynamic growth of Alam Sutera. It truly is a remarkable place.
