“A precious icon depicting the Annunciation. A masterpiece from the 15th century. Imagine its journey through time.”

Welcome to the Chapel of Annunciation in Dubrovnik. This Serbian Orthodox church is more than just a building. It’s a living testament to faith resilience and history. Located in the heart of the old town it stands as a silent observer of centuries past.

The Chapel of Annunciation wasn’t always here. The first request for an Orthodox church came in 1770. Count Orlov’s fleet seized Dubrovniks ships. This was during a mission to support a Greek revolt. As a consequence the Russian Empire agreed to send a consul. He was tasked with building an Orthodox chapel within the Russian consulate’s garden.

Years later in 1867 a wealthy trader Božo Bošković purchased three houses. He also bought a garden behind them. This became the site of the Chapel of Annunciation. The construction was completed in 1877. It was built for a community of just 300 people.

The Chapel of Annunciation boasts a remarkable collection of icons. Some date back to the 15th and 16th centuries. These icons are not just religious artifacts. They are works of art that tell stories of faith and devotion.

Sadly the Chapel of Annunciation suffered damage during the Siege of Dubrovnik. It endured the horrors of war. Despite this the chapel was restored in 2009. This was thanks to the combined efforts of the Croatian Ministry of Culture the City of Dubrovnik and private donations. It was truly a labor of love.

Today the Chapel of Annunciation is more than just a place of worship. It houses a museum. This contains religious objects such as a copy of the Miroslav Gospels. It also has a library with 12000 books. These include liturgical texts and works in various languages.

Step inside the Chapel of Annunciation. Take a moment to appreciate its beauty. Its serenity. Imagine the prayers whispered within these walls for generations. Let its story resonate with you long after you leave. This is more than just a building. It’s a treasure. A reminder of faith’s enduring power.
