Sixty-five meters high the spire of Montagny-Sainte-Félicité dominates the landscape. This church stands as a testament to faith. It is also a symbol of resilience. Welcome to Montagny-Sainte-Félicité. Today we will explore its rich history and architectural marvels.
Montagny-Sainte-Félicité is a French commune. It is located in the Oise department in the Hauts-de-France region. The village is in the south of Oise. It lies 45 km from Paris. The Montaféliciens call this place home.
The village has managed to maintain its rural charm. This is despite its proximity to Paris. It has controlled its urbanization. It has preserved its economic activities related to rural life. You can find local artisans here. There are also four farms. A market gardening and fruit business thrives here too. They grow strawberries and asparagus. Montagny-Sainte-Félicité has kept its village spirit alive. Dynamic associations contribute to this.
The church is isolated outside the village. It stands amidst fields. The historical heritage includes the church-hall. It marks the surrounding horizon. The village is part of the Oise-Pays de France regional natural park.
The first church of Montagny was already in the same location. It included a priory of the Abbey of Saint-Vincent of Senlis. The choice of location away from the village could be due to a nearby leprosarium. Rue du Moutier had houses up to the church.
The current building is a hall church in the Flamboyant style. It was built in the 16th century. It sits on the foundations of a previous 13th-century church. The southwest pile of the transept crossing remains from this earlier church. It supported the original bell tower.
The monumental altarpiece bears the date 1568. This indicates when most of the work was completed. The bell tower was likely finished in the 17th century. It was still built in the Flamboyant style. The Renaissance style had usually replaced this style for about fifty years.
The tall and elegant octagonal pyramidal spire catches the eye. It is 30 m high. It is openwork and adorned with hooks. It rises on a 35 m tower. Six levels mark the tower. These are emphasized by dripstones. The belfry stage has two twin bays with abat-son on each side. A balustrade finishes the walls. Small pinnacles crown the corner buttresses. They connect to the spire by small decorative flying buttresses. This bell tower is one of the highest in Oise. It is located at the southwest end of the church. A staircase turret flanks it to the southeast. This is also topped with a small spire.
The blind nave and aisles have six bays. These are not entirely homogeneous. They end in the east with a pentagonal choir. Five high bays light the choir. The interior layout is very similar to the church of Baron. All bays are vaulted with simple ribbed vaults. The ribs are penetrating. They merge into the undulating pillars. There are no capitals.
The choir grille dates from the 18th century. The baptismal fonts are in the Renaissance style. The western portal also follows this style.
After the Hundred Years’ War the church’s reconstruction was important. It was a moment for the parishioners. They were tested and marked by the conflict. The reconstruction at Montagny was total. Only one bay of the nave shows vestiges of the 13th-century church. The rest belongs to the Flamboyant Gothic style.
The church contains surprises. There is a stoup from 1572. You can find baptismal fonts and statues from the 16th century. An iron gate from the 18th century is here too. The magnificent polychrome altarpiece from 1568 is exceptional.
The spire dominates the landscape at 65 meters. It is among the highest in the Oise department. Montagny-Sainte-Félicité stands as a beacon. It is a blend of history art and faith. Its Flamboyant architecture and rich heritage captivate all. The church will leave you with a lasting sense of wonder.
