Nestled between Saint Victor, Saint François d’Assise, and Saint Cassien, Impasse du Belvédère whispers tales of a forgotten Marseille. Imagine a time before the familiar avenues, when this area was a rugged terrain, a no-man’s-land between parishes. Impasse du Belvédère, a mere footpath then, held a population disconnected from the spiritual heart of their communities. A determined nun, Sister Antoinette, saw not neglect, but opportunity. She embarked on a mission to evangelize the overlooked souls of Impasse du Belvédère and its surrounding area. Her compassion led her to Madame Dupuy, a local woman entrusted with catechizing the children. These children, described as “little savages,” initially met religious outreach with stones. Impasse du Belvédère was in need of a divine presence. Sister Antoinette sought the help of Father Bonaventure, a Franciscan monk. He had been displaced from his work in Endoume due to anti-clerical government policies, yet still traversed the area. Seeing the spiritual void in Impasse du Belvédère, he agreed to help. Together, with Abbé Laval’s blessing, they approached Bishop Joseph Fabre. They proposed a religious center in this forgotten corner of Roucas-Blanc. The Bishop enthusiastically agreed. They found a small building, an abandoned omnibus station, right where Impasse du Belvédère meets the main road. The ground floor, once a stable, was transformed into a chapel. The former horse stable became a sacristy and meeting room. The first mass at Impasse du Belvédère, a Christmas mass in 1906, was actually held in the salon of Comte Piccioni’s “La Maison Blanche”. The official opening of the Impasse du Belvédère chapel took place on February 10, 1907. The humble beginnings mirrored the nativity story. Impasse du Belvédère had its own Bethlehem. The church furnishings, repurposed from the closed Chapelle de la Grande Miséricorde, filled the space with a sense of history. The decree establishing the parish of Saint Antoine de Padoue specifically mentions Impasse du Belvédère as a boundary marker. The Impasse du Belvédère chapel served the community faithfully until 1922. Then, the small chapel was replaced by the grand Saint Antoine de Padoue church. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of Sister Antoinette and Father Bonaventure, and the community that grew around Impasse du Belvédère.
