Before you stands a remnant a fragile echo of a once vast wetland. The Tőzegtavak Dunakeszi or Dunakeszi peat bogs were once a rich tapestry of plant and animal life. Imagine a sprawling mosaic of small lakes and lush vegetation. This thrived undisturbed until the mid-20th century. The peat was harvested in the 1950s and 1960s. The resulting pits filled with groundwater creating the smaller lakes we see today.

They are fed by the higher lying gravel pit lakes. The dark peaty soil supports a unique plant community. The area is still home to a variety of plants including white willow and black poplar. It also shelters numerous insects and amphibians. The common water snail thrives here among other species.

Even today the Tőzegtavak Dunakeszi faces challenges. Illegal building and the encroachment of private property pose threats. The 2-meter strip along the shore is public land. But it has been built upon. Efforts are underway to address these issues. The local government and the Dunakeszi Tőzegtó Sports Fishing Association are collaborating. They aim for a solution that protects the area. This allows the continued enjoyment of the Tőzegtavak Dunakeszi by all.
