A whistle shrieks in the distance a familiar sound announcing the arrival of the Wolverine at Hammond-Whiting Amtrak Station. This unassuming station holds a surprising amount of history.
Welcome to Hammond-Whiting Amtrak Station a vital link in Amtrak’s network. Opened on September 12 1982 it wasn’t just another train stop. It was a strategic addition conceived by Indiana Representative Adam Benjamin Jr. He recognized the need for a suburban station to serve the growing area southeast of Chicago. Before Hammond-Whiting most Amtrak trains bypassed this area stopping only in much larger cities.
The station’s opening was a significant event. Initially ten daily round trips served the station including the International Limited Lake Cities Twilight Limited and Wolverine services. Long-distance trains like the Broadway Limited Capitol Limited Cardinal and Lake Shore Limited also made stops here. Hammond-Whiting was truly a bustling hub.
For nearly two decades the station thrived handling a large volume of Amtrak traffic. However the station had a design flaw. Its single side platform served only one of the line’s three tracks. This created major operational difficulties as the number of trains increased. Ridership decreased and Norfolk Southern Railway voiced operational concerns. The result service reductions began in the early 2000s.
One by one trains were removed from the Hammond-Whiting schedule. The Wolverine stopped in 2000. The Pere Marquette and International followed in 2001. The Pennsylvanian’s service ended in 2003. The station’s ticket agent was even let go in 2005. Today only two daily Wolverine round trips remain.
The story of Hammond-Whiting Amtrak Station is a reminder of the challenges faced by smaller rail stations. Despite its reduced service it serves as a lasting testament to a time when rail travel was far more extensive than it is today. The quiet station still stands as a silent witness to its impressive past. Its history is woven into the rails themselves a story of growth decline and the enduring allure of train travel. It’s a story whispered on the wind as the Wolverine glides into the station.
