Did you know that this sprawling 86-acre haven was once a bold experiment in horticulture? Welcome to Joseph Harris Scout Camp. It’s a place steeped in history a testament to a man’s passion for plants and a daughter’s enduring love.

Joseph Harris a nurseryman and Victorian politician arrived in Australia in 1856. His journey began in a small English village. He dreamt of striking gold but instead found success in Melbourne’s thriving nursery business. His love for plants eventually led him to purchase a significant property on Mount Martha. He experimented with exotic species alongside the renowned botanist Baron von Mueller.

Joseph Harris wasn’t just a businessman. He served as a councillor and even a Member of the Legislative Assembly. He was also a devoted family man and a respected member of his community. His life took an unexpected turn in the 1890s. The land boom collapsed and he faced financial ruin. Despite this setback he remained a figure of respect.

His daughter Rose Pitt inherited his 86-acre estate. She recognized its potential for the community. In 1931 she donated it to the Peninsula Scouts. This generous act created a lasting legacy. Joseph Harris Scout Camp became a reality.

The camp opened in 1932. Around 120 scouts attended the first camp. They came from towns all across the Mornington Peninsula. The camp has undergone many changes over the years. A devastating bushfire in 1936 destroyed many structures. However the Scouts rebuilt and expanded the camp.

Today Joseph Harris Scout Camp thrives. It boasts impressive facilities. There are campsites for thousands of people a large indoor activity center and a range of adventurous activities. You’ll find remnants of Joseph Harris’s horticultural passion scattered across the grounds including exotic trees planted decades ago. It’s a testament to his love of nature and the generosity of his daughter Rose.

Joseph Harris Scout Camp is more than just a campsite. It’s a living monument.
