Tucked away in West London, Ealing, Hammersmith and West London College has a fascinating past. It’s not just one college, but a fusion of histories. Ealing, Hammersmith and West London College was born in 2002. It came from the merger of Ealing Tertiary College and Hammersmith and West London College. Imagine the energy created when these institutions combined. This merger made it London’s largest further education college at the time. Over 30,000 students were enrolled. Ealing, Hammersmith and West London College traces its roots back to the 1880s. Hammersmith School of Art was founded in 1881. Later, it became part of the larger college we know today. Ealing Tertiary College also has a long history. It originated from Ealing County School, opened in 1913. The Southall Technical College, established in 1929, also became a part of Ealing, Hammersmith and West London College. This college sits on former playing fields of St Paul’s School. The Hammersmith campus replaced 11 separate sites across West London. Its Brutalist architecture, inspired by Alvar Aalto’s Säynätsalo Town Hall, stands as a testament to its 1970s construction. The Ealing Green campus houses the Ealing Institute of Media, a testament to the college’s dedication to modern media education. In 2008, the college received the Queen’s Award for Enterprise. This was a recognition of its international reach. In 2017, the college received the Times Educational Supplement FE Award. It was awarded for outstanding use of technology. From Estelle and Marcus Brigstocke to Sir Steve McQueen, Ealing, Hammersmith and West London College boasts a vibrant alumni community. Their achievements echo the diverse opportunities nurtured within the college’s walls.
