Was this elegant mansion always known as Château Gomel? You might be surprised to learn that this grand estate, the Château du domaine d’Orangis, acquired its popular nickname from a family who left a lasting mark on its history. The Château du domaine d’Orangis, with its stately presence, stands as a testament to changing times and enduring legacies. It was originally built in the 18th century. The château’s story is intertwined with notable figures from French history. The initial owner was none other than Count Charles-René de Bombelles, the seigneur d’Orangis. His life was marked by a unique chapter – he was morganatically married to Archduchess Marie-Louise of Austria. This means their marriage, though recognized, wouldn’t allow Charles-René or their descendants any claim to the Austrian throne. As we move into the 19th century, the Château du domaine d’Orangis changed hands, becoming the property of Jean-Baptiste Gomel. This prominent figure served as the mayor of Ris-Orangis from 1823 to 1828. His son, Charles-Samson Gomel, inherited not only the château but also his father’s legacy of leadership. He served as a councillor of state and later followed in his father’s footsteps to become mayor, holding the position from 1848 to 1880. The Gomel family’s influence extended beyond politics. Charles-Samson played a pivotal role in the construction of the Notre-Dame church, standing as one of its main benefactors. The profound impact of the Gomel family on the Château du domaine d’Orangis is evident in the nickname that has endured through time.
