Did you know there is a place where Lord Shiva is celebrated as Narvedeshwar? Here at the Shiv Mandir in Auckland, the divine energy of the Hindu god is palpable. The Shiv Mandir stands as a testament to the dedication of the Sanatan Shivarchan Trust. This trust was formed in August 1997, under the guidance of Aawahan Peethadhishwar Acharya Mahamandleshwar Shri 108 Swami Shivendra Puriji Maharaj. Their vision was to create a space where Sanatan Dharam philosophy, Hindu language, and culture could flourish in New Zealand. The journey began with the purchase of a vacant lot in 1998. First, a community hall was built, opening its doors on August 21, 2002. Then, with the continued support of the community, the Shiv Mandir itself was completed and inaugurated on May 29, 2004. Within the temple, you’ll find the revered Narvedeshwar Shiv Ling, representing Lord Shiva. At the entrance, Hanumanji stands guard, welcoming devotees. A full-time priest manages the temple and performs poojas for those who wish to offer their prayers. Beyond the spiritual significance, the Shiv Mandir serves as a vital community hub. The spacious community hall, measuring 35 meters by 16 meters, hosts various religious and cultural events. It’s equipped with a kitchen, a large stage, dining areas, storage, and office facilities. The trust organizes celebrations for major religious functions like Maha Shiv Raatri, Ram Naumi, Krishna Janamastami, and Navraatri, often spanning five to nine days. Other festivals, such as Ganesh Chaturthi and Hanuman Jayanti, are also observed. Moreover, the Shiv Mandir plays an essential role in promoting Hindu culture and language. Hindi classes are held every Sunday, along with cultural programs like drama and dance. The Shiv Mandir in Auckland is more than just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant center for cultural preservation and community engagement, nurturing the rich heritage of Sanatan Dharam in New Zealand.
